Construction Updates
If you’ve been watching the growth of our new residence halls on the webcam (or in-person), you’ve seen workers installing windows, shingling the roofs, and hanging siding on the first three buildings on the north site.
With the outside covered, work now begins inside the lodges. Drywall is already going up. During the next few weeks, construction workers will focus on the heating and cooling systems.
- The heating and cooling system will allow each apartment to control how hot or cold it is in student living spaces – something residents rank as highly important in nationwide studies.
- Our lodges are going green by using high-efficiency products that decrease greenhouse gas emissions and carbon in the environment. This system will also result in lower heating and cooling bills to the university, and the savings will be passed on to students.
Along with heating and cooling, plumbers and electricians soon will install piping for water and electricity to the apartments. Electricians will cable every bedroom for high-speed Internet access, and are providing wireless Internet access throughout the building. The safety equipment also goes in at this phase.
- A state-of-the art sprinkler and fire suppression system that far exceeds all safety standards established by both national and local building codes is going into every room now.
- An alert system that includes audible and flashing strobe light alarms is being installed in every bedroom. Add to that fire alarm pull stations and high-tech smoke detectors, and we have a truly state-of-the-art emergency alert system.
In the meantime, lodges on the south side of the IU Southeast lake are also taking shape from the ground up. One is nearly framed to the roof, while concrete footings are almost done on the fifth lodge. Landscaping and a barrier between the lodges and the railroad tracks will be coming soon.
Exciting times await the IU Southeast community as our faculty, staff, and students watch this work with great interest. Stay tuned for more updates on construction and for pictures of our progress.
