Welcome from Director
Welcome parents!
On behalf of the faculty and staff at IU Southeast, I would like to welcome you to the IU family. We are grateful that you have placed your trust in us to provide the total college experience for your son or daughter. Living on campus can be one of the most significant experiences in the growth and development of a young person. For some students, this will be the first time they have ever had to share a bathroom or living spaces with another person.
Living on campus is a major part of the college experience. A great deal of research has been conducted about college students who do or do not live on campus. In general, students who live on campus spend more time studying resulting in higher grades and greater likelihood of graduation. Likewise, on-campus students also develop advanced problem solving skills, better communication and conflict resolution skills, and a greater appreciation and understanding for other people.
But, living on campus can also be the biggest challenge a student faces. Increased interaction with other students living in close proximity to each other means that there are greater opportunities for conflict to emerge. Yet, surprisingly, some students sometimes report feelings of loneliness and homesickness, despite the many opportunities they have to engage with other students.
Please be assured that my staff and I are committed to the success of your students. The residential experience can become the defining collegiate experience. In this section of our website, you will find valuable resources to help your student make a successful transition to college. You may also find some words of wisdom that will help you as a parent to answer questions from your student.
We wish you and your student many happy days ahead as members of the IU Southeast family. If at any time you have questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
Sincerely,
Jim A Schlinsog
