Position:  Landscape/Grounds Assistant - Part-time, hourly summer position
Department:  Physical Plant
Salary:  $9.74 / hr

The hours are 20-25 per week


Enhance the perception of IUS by ensuring a pleasing and useful environment of the campus grounds and property. Assist with the operation of the greenhouse, the mum field and the rose garden.  Tasks include, but are not limited to, mowing, trimming, and edging grass; raking and collecting leaves; seeding, fertilizing, planting, pruning, weeding, mulching and watering trees, shrubs and flowers; shoveling snow; spreading salt, cinders and sand; and operating grounds equipment.


Ability to read, understand and follow written/oral instructions

Pesticide applicators license preferred

Ability to work flexible schedule

Ability to work under diverse weather conditions

Proven orientation toward quality service

Ability to lift and carry 100 pounds

Average mobility required

Experience with some of the following equipment: sprayer, riding and walk behind mowers, tractor, chainsaw, backhoe, power seeded, clippers, trencher, bush hog, pruning tools, spreader, truck with snow blade and salt spreader, forklift, water pumps, weed eater, blower, hand tools, garden tools, shovel, rack, pick, posthole digger, etc.

Ability to sit, stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift, carry, push, pull, reach, handle, use fingers, see, climb a ladder and work in awkward positions

Unpleasant working conditions are: contact with hazardous chemicals, unpleasant odors, loud noise, hot and cold temperatures, and dusty conditions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                              

 Parking Lots and Lawn:

Collect trash and debris.

Mow grass. Trim and edge walks. Rake and collect leaves. Seed and fertilize lawn

Maintain parking lots, walkways, paths, fitness trail, tennis courts, ball field, track, campus outdoor furniture and road signs. Tasks include but not limited to seal coat, strip, paint, and minor repairs to paved areas.  Clear debris, branches, broken glass, and leaves.  Remove snow, spread salt, cinders and sand.

Plant, prune, weed, mulch and water trees, shrubs, flowers, bulbs and interior plants.

Spray chemicals to control weeds and insects.


Operate, maintain and assist with the repair of grounds equipment (tractors, mowers, seeders, sprayers, chainsaws, weed eaters, backpack blower and pruning tools.) Tasks include but not

limited to: sharpen blades, change oil, pick up parts, maintain and update equipment.

Periodic duties:

Deliver supplies to campus departments with a fork truck and event set-up/tear down.

Hazardous Waste:

Assist the Safety and Security Department with the removal and handling of hazardous waste and toxic waste.

 Occasional Duties:

Assist with carpet replacement. Assist maintenance services with construction projects such as: paint, minor carpentry, concrete work, drywall, etc.  Maintenance on outside lights.  Pump water out of manholes and off rooftops. Assume custodial responsibilities. Move furniture, instruments, equipment and other supplies.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
