Responsibilities:  The School of Natural Sciences, Computer Science Department (www.ius.edu/ComputerScience ) is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track Computer Science position starting August 2008 at the assistant professor level. 

Preference will be given to candidates who:
• Demonstrate experience in the areas of database and software engineering.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in teaching, and the ability to teach the breadth of the ACM curriculum.
• Demonstrate an on-going research program in Computer Science.
The position will have responsibility for teaching both required and elective undergraduate courses in Computer Science. A normal teaching load is 12 hours per semester. Director of the Institute for Local & Oral History - School of Social Sciences Print this Job Posting

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:
This half-time (20 hours a week) Director of the Institute for Local and Oral History position is in the History Program in the School of Social Sciences. The Director will work closely with the History Faculty in setting up an innovative research institute that focuses on student and community involvement in all aspects of the local and oral history of the Ohio Valley region. The Director will set up various research projects, recruit students, conduct seminars and presentations to the local community and the university, and publish scholarly and popular pieces on the work of the Institute. The Director will also seek out additional funding opportunities. The Director will also work across the IU Southeast campus with all departments, the library, with the faculty, and other relevant campus offices at IU Southeast in nurturing the program. The Director represents History, Social Sciences, and IU Southeast in the community. This position reports to the Coordinator of History and the Dean of Social Sciences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in History required. A Ph.D. in History preferred.
Course work, experience, or knowledge of Local History and Oral History techniques and practices.

  • Ability to teach Oral History and US survey courses.
  • Expert knowledge of the Ohio Valley area, particularly Southern Indiana and the Louisville Metro area. Connections with local organizations a bonus.
  • Ability to recruit students for projects, engage the local community in the Institute and work diligently for long periods on various concurrent research projects.
  • Experience with computer applications and databases needed for research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an ability to set, pursue, and achieve goals.
  • Ability to understand and follow relevant laws and campus policies pertinent to areas of responsibility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director will work with students at IUS to set up local history and oral history projects, set up internships at local history sites, and also seek out other opportunities and connections with various civic groups and local organizations to create dynamic research opportunities.

Director will work with students at IUS on specific research projects utilizing oral history techniques. Students will engage in active and applied learning.

Establish relationships between the university and the local community through a local history archive at IUS. In addition, the Director will set up events, conferences, and presentations both in the local community and on campus on local and oral history.

Establish close ties with the local community by presenting the work of the Institute at various regional organizations, businesses and in the media. In addition, the Director will bring notable publicity to the campus and highlight the excellent quality of IUS.

Director will engage in grant writing and seeking out funding opportunities and the local, state, and national level. This money will be used to fund more research projects and invest in archival facilities and IUS.

The Director will teach a class each year at IUS in Oral History as part of their responsibilities, as a way of recruiting students and training researchers. The classes will be open to all students on campus. Additional teaching at adjunct salary rates might be available the alternate semester and during the summer.

Establish and maintain an updated list of majors, graduates, and alumni. Provide the dean information on recruiting, retention, and graduation rates. Assist the school with desired surveys of incoming freshman and/or exiting seniors and stop/drop outs.

Engage in professional development in the field of Local and Oral History, attend academic conferences and seek out undergraduate research conference venues for students.

Write yearly reports on the progress of the Institute to the Dean of Social Sciences. The Director will be evaluated each year. A list of Assessment criteria will be drawn up between the History Faculty and the Director.
