Admission/Application

The IU Southeast Modern Languages Department offers courses for both beginning students with no previous study of a language and students who have studied a language prior to enrollment at IU Southeast.

Recommended Preparation

Once accepted to IU Southeast, students may begin studying a modern language at any time. We recommend that students begin their study of language as soon as possible, both to satisfy the language requirement and to pave the way for a higher-level of study in the future.

The basic language requirement for most degree programs is four semesters of a single language. Beyond this, IU Southeast offers a minor, a teaching minor, and a major in French, German, and Spanish. We encourage students majoring in one language to minor in another.

A student getting an IU Southeast Education degree may choose to obtain a teaching minor in French, German or Spanish. This teaching minor certifiers graduating students to teach at either the elementary or secondary level, according to their area of specialization. (Please see the IU Southeast License Advisor in the School of Education).
