English-style brass bands trace their origin to the recreational bands formed for factory and mine workers in Great Britain during the 19th century Industrial Revolution. They consist of conical bore brass instruments and percussion. Cornets are used rather than trumpets and tenor horns in place of French horns. Fans of the 1996 movie, "Brassed Off!" starring Ewen McGregor and Pete Postlethwaite are familiar with the makeup, sound, and style of the English brass band.

The event begins at 1:00pm with performances by the Commonwealth Brass Band (ensemble in residence at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany), the Derby City Brass Band (Louisville, Kentucky) at 2:10pm, and the Brass Band of Central Illinois (based in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois) at 3:15pm.

The featured band of the festival will be the Athena Brass Band - the first modern all-female brass band in the United States - at 4:30pm. National in scope, the Athena Brass Band musicians include current or former members of the U.S. Army Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, Brass Band of Battle Creek and the New Sousa Band. There are several college professors and public school music educators, conductors, music therapists, a sound engineer, a music publisher and a composer; also a nuclear physicist, a biologist, a sociologist, an MBA and an author.
