Geosciences Students Working Hard to get IUS Recognition as Tree Campus

IU Southeast Campus

Geoscience majors Misty Perkins and Rachel Missi have completed an inventory of IU Southeast Campus trees. Working with Mr. Clint Franklin and Dr. Pete Galvin, they have identified, measured and mapped nearly 1100 trees. The data will be incorporated with a geographical information system and global positioning into an interactive map and Web page.

Misty and Rachel, together with Mr. Jim Wolfe (Physical Plant) and SNS Dean Nassim have been working to establish a campus tree advisory committee and get IU Southeast designated as an official Tree Campus under the auspices of the Arbor Day Foundation.

In April, the committee celebrated Arbor Day by planting a river birch near the lake shelter house. Any interested individuals are encouraged to join the committee. The full Tree Campus article can be found in the Summer 2013 issue of IU Southeast magazine.
