Students who plan to obtain a certificate, A.S., or B.S. degree in an allied health program must contact the IU Southeast Allied Health Sciences coordinator at (812) 941-2184 before planning their program of study.
Certificate in Medical Transcription
The Medical Transcription Certificate is 16 credit hours of class plus clinical application hours. Students are trained to transcribe medical, surgical, radiology and pathology reports dictated by physicians.
Certificate in Coding Specialist
Students take 18 credit hours of class study, plus two clinical application hours. Students are trained using ICD-9-CM and CPT in health care settings. With work experience, students will be ready to take the AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist Examination.
Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Clinical laboratory science is aimed at quality performance of clinical laboratory procedures on biological samples from patients. The results of these procedures provide important patient data that aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
The clinical laboratory science curriculum offered at IU Southeast provides a broadly based background including specific chemistry, mathematics, and biological science requirements, as well as the opportunity to elect courses from the liberal arts. The curriculum of the clinical laboratory science program is fully accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation.
Other Pre-Allied Health Science Degree Programs
Students interested in degrees in allied health science fields can take courses toward those degrees at IU Southeast. Students generally can take one to three years at IU Southeast and then must complete their degrees at another institution, such as the Indiana University Medical Center at Indianapolis. Many such students will be only a few courses short of an A.A. in biology.

Students interested in occupational therapy must ultimately earn a master’s degree, while those interested in physical therapy must ultimately earn a doctorate in that field. Contact the School of Natural Sciences for information about preprofessional preparation at the bachelor’s level.
