BIOLOGY

Dr. Omar Attum, Assistant Professor of Biology, is the Author  of an article titled "A Place for Science - Where I Do Science" published in the August 2008 issue of SEED Magazine.  The article describes his research work, as a wildlife biologist, in Egypt.

Jake Beam, Graduating Senior, won the Best Presentation at the IU Southeast Student Conference in April 2008 .  His presentation was titled, "Reengineering the Plasmid pLTV1 with the Green Fluorescent Protein."  His research mentor was Biology Professor, Dr. Gretchen Kirchner.

Dr. Michelle Bowe visited in March 2008 from Missouri State University and brought three graduate students to share their experiences with IU Southeast undergraduates.  She presented a talk titled, “Cryptic invasion of Siberian elm: evidence for loss of native elm genomes”.

Dr. Pam Connerly, Assistant Professor of Biology, received a $3000 grant in November 2007 from the Indiana Academy of Sciences to support her research.

Dr. Douglas Darnowski, Associate Professor of Biology, has been elected as the President of the International Carnivorous Plant Society which has members on 6 continents, in 38 countries.

Dr. Darnowski was co-chair and co-organizer of the latest Biannual meeting of the International Carnivorous Plant Society which met in Frostburg, MD, on June 6, 2008. Dr. Darnowski and Mr. Alan Tate, an IUS senior, and one of Dr. Darnowski's research students presented three talks at this meeting.

Dr. Darnowski was the winner of a new $2200 balance from Ohaus based on a case study of his use of his existing Ohaus balance for metabolomic studies of carnivorous plants.

Dr. David Dilcher, internationally-renowned scientist, was hosted in November 2007 by Indiana University Southeast as part of the Natural Sciences Seminar series.  Dilcher was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1989.  Dilcher, a professor who retired from IU Bloomington, is an expert on fossil plants, including flowers and their evolution and origin.  He gave a presentation titled, “The origin of flowering plants and their co-evolution from insects to people.” Recently he co-authored a publication with IU Southeast professor, Dr. David Winship Taylor, and postdoc researcher, Dr. Shusheng Hu.

Dr. Shusheng Hu, Instructor and  Biology Postdoctoral Fellow, has a publication that has been recognized by the  Faculty of 1000 Biology. The paper, "Early Steps of Angiosperm-Pollinator Coevolution," was coauthored by S.Hu, D.L. Dilcher, D.M. Jarzen and D.W. Taylor and published in April of 2008 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).  Faculty of 1000 Biology selects the most interesting papers published in biology, based on the suggestions of the top researchers in the field.

INFORMATICS

John Lannon, Informatics Major and Bioinformatics Research Group (BiRG) Lab Member, presented a paper on his research with Dr. Sridhar Ramachandran, Assistant Professor of Informatics, at the Undergraduate Research Conference at Indiana University Southeast on April 18, 2008. This work won the Chancellor's Award for Interdisciplinary achievement. The work has been extended to appear in the IU Undergraduate Research Journal.

Dr. Sridhar Ramachandran, Assistant Professor of Informatics, was recently awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Excellence in Service award in recognition of his efforts in the field of Bioinformatics. The award was presented on October 15, 2007, at the Harvard Medical School during the IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering.

Dr. Sridhar Ramachandran, Assistant Professor of Informatics, was recently invited by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to serve as a panelist for reviewing the 2008 Informatics grant solicitations. The panel consisted of national experts in Informatics and convened on April 10-11, 2008, at Washington DC. The panel was a division of the Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) panel at NSF.
