The Grounds Team is responsible for maintaining the external portions of the campus. This includes the seasonal lawn maintenance, trimming, and maintaining flower beds for the majority of the year as well as snow removal in the winter.

In the event of any significant snowfall roads, parking lots, and paths will be plowed and salted to keep at least one pathway to each building clear. It is the department's goal to maximize safety so if any potentially hazardous areas of ice or snow remain, please report it to the Physical Plant. If conditions are dangerous, the campus may be closed and the proper notification system will be activated.

The team is also responsible for the spraying of herbicides and pesticides to maintain the beauty of our campus environment. At normal levels the chemicals that are used present a low-risk to passersby and the gear worn by the applicators is to protect them in case of equipment failure which could cause the chemicals to be released at a higher concentrations. After the spraying of herbicides, signs will be placed to advise people to keep off the grass until it dries. The proportion of air being drawn from outside is such that the chemicals being used will not affect people inside the buildings.

The team also provides support for the various outdoor athletic facilities. The 4 fulltime employees currently maintain approximately 200 acres and do an incredible job in providing us with a beautiful and natural environment.

The IU Southeast campus contains three bodies of water which are maintained by the Grounds department. No swimming or boating is allowed in any of them. Fishing is allowed in the lake behind the University Center and in the pond near the baseball field. Periodically these are treated with chemicals to control aquatic weeds. If it is necessary, signs will be posted telling when it's safe to fish again.

Emergency situations should be phoned in to the Physical Plant at (812) 941-2330, but all other requests must be received in writing. For emergency situations after normal business hours contact University Police at (812) 941-2400.
