Chancellor's Outlook

Last May, after all the hustle and bustle of graduation and year-end activities, I was looking forward to "the lazy days of summer," much like our students. No matter how far I go in my education career, for some reason I always anticipate the summer months will have a less hectic pace and will allow me more time to study, reflect, and strategize.

However, on this late August morning, as I welcomed new faculty to campus, like many others I found myself wondering "where did the summer go?" We surely did not have many "lazy days." Our campus has been abuzz with activity all summer long. In addition to hosting many conference groups for a variety of meetings throughout the summer, we have enthusiastically welcomed our new students to campus with a completely revised orientation program. We increased the number of orientation sessions, and rather than ask students to register for classes all on one day, instead we scheduled individual appointments for students with our advisors during the days following their orientation session. In this way we hope to give each and every student the best counseling at the very beginning of their academic career at IU Southeast. This process makes for a busy summer but one that reaps huge benefits for our students.

Regardless of how busy our summer months seem to be, I am always excited and energized by the opening of a new school year. Whether we consider the elementary school kids standing at the bus stop with new sneakers and neon-colored backpacks or college students strolling into the plaza from their many-hued vehicles in the parking lot, in their faces we can see worlds of potential ready to be unleashed with the beginning of yet another stage of learning. We are proud to be the college of choice for so many people in our region, and we thrive on helping them grow and flourish both personally and professionally. To all of our students, faculty, staff, and community members I extend a very warm welcome to a fresh, busy year filled with much promise.
