Faculty and staff recognized at State of the Campus address
Faculty and staff award recipients were announced at the chancellor's annual meeting September 6 at the Ogle Center. Prior to Chancellor
Sandra Patterson-Randles's "State of the Campus" address, employees of IU Southeast were recognized for research, teaching, and service.
Faculty members David Treves and Christa Zorn received awards for distinguished research and creativity. Treves, who received his Ph.D. from the
University of Michigan in 1998, joined IU Southeast in 2002. Working with IU Southeast students, Treves has investigated the microbiology of the
Loop Island Wetlands near the Moser Leather Tannery in New Albany and the impact of oil spills in the Ohio River.
Zorn received her master's degrees in English, history, and educational science from Hamburg University in Germany and her Ph.D. in English from the
University of Florida before joining the faculty at IU Southeast in 1995. Zorn has published numerous articles and book reviews, and she has
presented papers at national and international conferences.
Faculty members Anne Guernsey Allen and Ann Niren were recognized for teaching methods. Allen received her Master of Arts in art history from San
Diego University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in art history before joining IU Southeast in 1994. She has conducted field research in Western
Samoa and has shared her love of art and knowledge with her students.
Niren received a master's degree in music theory from Northwestern University and is currently working on a Ph.D. in musicology from a joint University
of Kentucky/University of Louisville Ph.D. program. Teaching on a part-time basis at IU Southeast since 1988, she has taught a wide array of courses,
served on numerous student juries and auditions, and contributed to the development of the music program in many ways.
Staff members Brittany Hubbard and Dennis Simon received recognition due to outstanding and distinguished service to the University.
Hubbard started at IUS in 2001 and in July 2005 was hired as director of Financial Aid. She was an integral part in the success of the PeopleSoft
implementation for all eight campuses. Simon, who is currently serving as interim chief of police, has been an employee of IUS for almost eight years. He
was instrumental in attaining financial support from local businesses to provide the University with a new motorized wheelchair.
Sharon Burke was the recipient of the distinguished service award for clerical staff. Burke came to IUS in January of 1994 as the faculty administrative
assistant in education. In 1997, she took the position of office services assistant senior in the same department. Effectively dealing with diverse personalities
and handling many situations that arise as well as her knowledge of the ever-changing world of education helped her receive this recognition.
Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles ended the annual meeting with a recap of the year's accomplishments. "In the past year we have accomplished much at IU
Southeast, and we have just begun a new school year that promises to be just as exciting and rewarding," she said. "But progress only comes through the hard
work and dedication of the many people both in our campus community and in our local community who make IU Southeast the fine educational institution that
it is. Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of our students and IU Southeast as we continue to grow toward distinction."
