Hamilton Scholars Recognized at Reception
Former Ninth District Congressman Lee Hamilton awarded 12 IUS students with scholarships Oct. 7 in the new library. The recipients were honored for excelling in both
academics and volunteer work. Of the 12 students, 10 are studying at IUS and two are studying abroad in Germany and Ghana in West Africa. Cliff Staten, dean of the School
of Social Sciences, read remarks of the students currently out of the states.
Congressman Hamilton served for 34 years in Congress and established himself as an expert in foreign affairs, economic policy, and congressional organization. His government
service has earned him such awards as Time magazine's "People Who Matter." He currently acts as president and director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
in Washington, D.C., which provides policymakers, business leaders, and scholars a forum for discussions on public policy.
IUS Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles addressed the crowd by praising both Hamilton and the scholarship recipients. "The students here today have accepted the challenge to
be exceptional leaders and community champions," she said. "Although young in age, they are models for their peers and have excelled both in and out of the classroom."
Of Hamilton, Patterson-Randles said he is a "distinguished leader, legislator, and good friend to IU Southeast" adding that she is grateful that he supports IU Southeast
and helps "encourage the students to reach out and learn beyond their textbooks."
