IUS Times
Around Campus for November
P.A.T. Award
Congratulations to Marion Pastor, recipient of the Point After Touchdown, or P.A.T. award. The award is given to an employee of IUS who has performed at an outstanding
level. Pastor, an accounting clerk in the IUS Bookstore, has worked for many weeks with customers who have been double-charged on their debit cards. She managed to work
with many disgruntled customers and help solve problems without losing their patronage.
Halloween Fun
From a princess to a dinosaur, kids dressed up from the IUS Children's Center got lots of candy and smiles from IUS employees as they trick-or-treated around campus.
Mad Hatter
The Mad Hatter Tea Party, a program that helped kids decorate a derby-style hat brought from home, was held Oct. 16 in the Multipurpose Room of University Center South. IUS
students dressed up as Alice in Wonderland characters to entertain the children.
A Special Thank You
Sandy Forrest, records assistant in the Office of the Registrar, received a rare form of appreciation when she took extra steps to help out a group of students. While
the registrar's office was closed for relocation purposes, Forrest re-opened the office to help them with transcript requests. The students were so touched that they
brought her a cookie cake the next day to thank her for the help.
Fulbright Specialist
IUS won approval to host a Fulbright Visiting Specialist from September 19 to October 23. Hassan Abu-Jarad is an associate professor of applied English linguistics at
Al-Azhar University in Gaza City, Gaza Strip. He is a citizen on the Palestinian territories, received his Ph.D. from Ball State University and spent a year at St. John's
College in Annapolis, Md., as a Fulbright Scholar.
During his stay, he assisted with courses on the topics of comparative politics, nationalism, gender and society, and U.S. foreign policy. The University received approval
after submitting an application last fall to the Fulbright Visiting Specialist Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World.
Lilly Grant
Mary Anne Baker, director of Institutional Research; Gloria Murray, dean of the School of Education; and Uric Dufrene, dean of the School of Business were integral members
of two teams that helped secure a grant of $1.5 million to establish an endowment for the sustainability of literacy programs. The New Albany-Floyd county Consolidated School
Corporation will receive $1,142,000 and the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana will be given $358,000. The funds will be used to help young children with reading
proficiency in the surrounding areas.
