Medallion Dinner Brings out the Brightest Stars

Community Leaders and Outstanding Students Honored

Fortunately, the predicted snow didn't fall on February 25th and the 13th annual Chancellor's Medallion Award Dinner and silent auction went off as smoothly as planned.

Held at Huber's Orchard and Winery, this year's event brought a crowd of 473. Highlights of the evening included recognition of three IU Southeast seniors as Chancellor's Medallion Scholars Class of 2006, followed by recognition of three Chancellor's Medallion Winners for community service. Over $14,000 was raised through the silent auction. The proceeds raised from the auction are used for scholarships.

Students Sara Lynn Endler (elementary education), Alcinda Emilia Flowers (biology), and Tabitha Leigh Springler (sociology) received the Chancellor's Medallion Scholar award for their outstanding academic and community service. Each of the students will receive a $3,000 scholarship.

Three Southern Indiana residents were honored as Chancellor's Medallion Winners, Norman Melhiser and Sue and Carlton Sanders.

Douglas York spoke in honor of Melhiser. The two have worked together for many years, and York is the Managing Partner for Melhiser, Endres, Tucker, CPAs, a firm founded by Melhiser. York told of Melhiser's leadership and positive attitude, as well as his countless contributions to Southern Indiana. Melhiser's son-in-law, Dan Williamson, also spoke, telling the crowd how much his father-in-law has inspired others and been a role model for the entire community.

For Sue and Carlton Sanders, IU Southeast School of Business Dean Uric Dufrene took the podium and told about how he first met and later became close friends with Sue and Carlton. Dufrene said that Carlton and Sue are ideal examples of how education can change lives. Both have used education as a springboard to reach high ideals and return their good fortune to others through philanthropy and community service. Sue Sanders retired from Aegon with 40 years of distinguished service. Carlton is perhaps best known as "Judge Carlton" for his tenure as Harrison County Superior Court Judge, a position he held for 12 years.

The 2006 honorees join a distinguished list of past Medallion winners. That list includes Richard K. Stem, J. Robert Shine, former Governor Frank O'Bannon, former Congressman Lee Hamilton, Dale Orem, and others.

WAVE 3 Meteorologist John Belski was the master of ceremonies for this year's Medallion Dinner. The event is planned and managed by the IU Southeast Board of Advisors in collaboration with the Office of University Advancement.
