Strategic Plan

Goal #1 - Educational Excellence

The School of Social Sciences will offer students high quality undergraduate and graduate education that is student centered and in accordance with its mission statement. (see also Goal #1 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    Each discipline will continue to ensure the quality of its adjunct faculty teaching. (faculty members of each discipline)
    1. 1.1.1
      Each discipline will ensure that courses taught by its adjunct faculty members are comparable to the courses taught by resident faculty in terms of discipline expectations, class goals and assignments, and student expectations. (faculty members of each discipline)
  2. 1.2
    The school will pursue the development of master’s degree programs in accordance with the IU policy. (dean and faculty) (see also 2.3)

    The school will work to expand the number of full-time faculty members across the disciplines. (dean and faculty)

Goal #2 - Student Success

The School of Social Sciences will develop strategies to foster recruitment, retention, and persistence to graduation. (see also Goal #2 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    Each discipline will provide an annual discussion for its majors and other interested students concerning what they can do with their degree. (faculty members of each discipline)
  2. 2.2
    The school will develop a process for contacting all majors who “stop out” and find out why the student is no longer attending and find out what social sciences can do to get that student back into classes (dean, professional adviser, secretaries)
  3. 2.3
    The school will pursue the development of master’s degree programs in accordance with the IU policy. (dean and faculty) (see also 1.2)

    Each discipline and the school’s professional adviser will make a concerted effort to recommend the various IU Southeast honors programs to its students (faculty and school professional adviser)

    Dean and faculty will work closely with admissions and other relevant departments on campus to organize “student” days on campus for high school and other potential students to attend classes taught by faculty.

    The school will develop an admission process that will enhance retention and persistence to graduation. It should consider but not be limited to the following criteria: students must successfully complete W131 (C or better) prior to admission as a major; students must have complete at least 12 hours of college credit prior to admission as a major; and/or students must meet with a faculty member of the discipline and the professional adviser and work out a complete graduation plan during the first semester as a major.     The school will seek ways to work with the Schools of Natural Sciences and Arts & Letters to develop a strategy for making students more aware of the congruence between the expectations/demands of the global job market and the preparation provided by a B.A. degree. Goal #3 - Enhanced Diversity

The School of Social Sciences will continue to adhere to its diversity plan. (see also Goal #3 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    The school will periodically assess, evaluate, and modify its diversity plan as necessary (dean and faculty) (see also IU Southeast School of Social Sciences Diversity Plan)

Goal #4 - Strengthened Resources

The School of Social Sciences will strengthen, increase, and leverage its resource base to support current operations and future growth, high quality programming, faculty and staff excellence, and high caliber facilities and equipment. (see Goal #4 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    The School will promote staff development.
    1. 4.1.1
      Secretaries will attend workshops and seminars as needed so as to continually upgrade their skills so as to better meet the needs of the faculty and students (dean and secretaries)

      Professional staff, such as the professional adviser, will attend professional meetings, seminars, and workshops as needed so as to continually upgrade their skills so as to better meet the needs of the students, programs, and faculty (dean and professional staff)

    The School will promote faculty development.

      Each discipline will develop its own mentoring program for junior faculty. (faculty members of each discipline)
    2. 4.2.2
      At least once prior to their third year review, all junior faculty will have their teaching observed by the dean and by all full- and associate-level faculty in their own discipline. (dean and senior faculty)

      The dean will continue to work to increase the amount of money available to each faculty member for travel to professional meetings and workshops. (dean) (see also 4.4.2)

      The school will re-evaluate the current travel allotment to faculty. Issues to be discussed should include but not be limited to the possibility of providing more money to those who present papers or chair a session and less money for those who simply attend. (faculty) (see also 4.4.3)

      The annual merit review process will be re-evaluated with recommendations brought forward to the school to either maintain, modify, or develop an alternative annual merit review process. (faculty)

      The school with appropriate departments, such as ILTE, will host regular workshops on the topics of assessment, teaching tools, pedagogy and teaching philosophies. (dean and faculty)

    The School will enhance its infrastructure needs.

      The school will continue to develop the Crestview downstairs “lounge area” to showcase the talents of its students and faculty. (dean and faculty)

    The School will make more efficient and better use of and enhance its monetary resources.

      The school will work with the appropriate departments to encourage alumni to contribute to the school’s foundation.

        The school will develop a simple way to contribute to its foundation via the school’s website. (dean)

        The school will periodically ask its alumni to contribute to the school’s foundation via regular mail or through some type of campaign. (dean).

      The dean will continue to work to increase the amount of money available to each faculty member for travel to professional meetings (dean) (see also 4.2.3)

      The school will investigate and recommend strategies to the appropriate committees and administration officials to deal with compression in salaries for full-time faculty. (faculty)

Goal #5 - Enhanced Image

The School of Social Sciences will define and enhance its image and raise its profile. (see Goal #5 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    The school will develop an E-Newsletter that will go out to all current majors, parents of majors, alumni, faculty, staff, and community offices/people. (school E-Newsletter committee)
  2. 5.2
    The school will ensure that its website is up-to-date concerning faculty and student achievements. (dean, coordinators, and designated secretary)
  3. 5.3
    The school will continue to develop the Crestview downstairs “lounge area” to showcase the talents of its students and faculty. (dean and faculty) (see also 4.3.3)
  4. 5.4
    The school will fully develop its Social Sciences Forum. (school forum committee)
  5. 5.5
    Each discipline will investigate the possibility of developing its own chapter of an academic honor society, such as Pi Sigma Alpha in political science. (faculty members of each discipline)
  6. 5.6
    The school will investigate either the possibility of discipline based external accrediting agencies or program standards of excellence that have been developed by professional discipline-based organizations. The purpose of this is to be able to advertise programmatic excellence.

    The school will create a Community Board of Advisers to promote alumni involvement with the school. (dean and faculty)
  8. 5.8
    The school will contact local newspapers to get stories focusing on student success and faculty profiles. (dean and coordinators)

Goal #6 - Stronger Community Relations

The School of Social Sciences will enhance its relations with the various communities it serves. (see Goal #6 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    The school will develop an E-Newsletter that will go out to all current majors, alumni, faculty, staff, and community offices/people (school E-Newsletter committee) (see also 5.1)
  2. 6.2
    Community-related service activities by faculty will be given more weight in the annual merit salary review process, the third year review, and the promotion and/or tenure processes. (dean and faculty)

Goal #7 – Ongoing Strategic Planning

The School of Social Sciences will develop a system for well-coordinated, ongoing strategic planning. (see Goal #7 in the IU Southeast Strategic Plan)

    The school will conduct a brief assessment of the strategic plan after its first 2 years of implementation (dean and strategic plan committee)
  2. 7.2
    During the 5th year of the current plan the school will evaluate the progress under each goal/initiative, and eliminate/change/add goals and initiatives as necessary for the next 5 year plan (dean and strategic plan committee)
