Honors ProgramsPlease see your advisor or the Dean of the School of Social Sciences concerning admission to these programs. Criminal Justice Honors Program. Admission to the Criminal Justice Honors Program requires the following: the student must be a criminal justice major with junior standing; the student must have at least a 3.5 GPA in all courses and at least a 3.5 GPA in criminal justice courses; and the student must have completed 15 hours of criminal justice courses including V170 and J101. Once admitted to the program honors students will complete a double major in Criminal Justice Honors and Criminal Justice. In addition to meeting the requirements for the criminal justice major, the honors student must complete V391 (one hour) taken in conjunction with three advanced criminal justice courses and V499 (one hour) taken in conjunction with V439. Finally, honors students must maintain the 3.5 GPA in all courses and the 3.5 GPA in criminal justice courses. History Honors Program. Admission to the History Honors Program requires the following: the student must be a history major with junior standing; the student must have at least a 3.3 GPA in all courses and at least a 3.5 GPA in history courses; and the student must have completed 15 hours of history courses including H236. The students must also be admitted into the Tier Two of the Indiana University Southeast’s Honors Program. Once admitted to the program, honors students will complete a double major in History Honors and History. In addition to meeting the requirements for the history major, the honors student at the advanced level must complete at least three 300-level or higher courses (as opposed to a mixture of 200 and 300 levels); three advanced history courses in one regional area (as opposed to the normal two); and in the senior seminar paper receive a grade of B or better from anonymous evaluation from the entire resident history faculty. The student must participate in a field trip with faculty and other honors students to a historic site or complete an internship related to the discipline. The honors student must present a research paper at an undergraduate or professional conference or have the paper published in a journal. Finally, honors students must maintain the 3.3 GPA in all courses and the 3.5 GPA in history courses. Journalism Honors Program. Admission to the Journalism Honors Program requires the following: the student must be a journalism major with junior standing; the student must have at least a 3.3 GPA in all courses and at least a 3.5 GPA in journalism courses; and the student must have completed 15 hours of journalism courses including C200, J200 and one semester of C327. Once admitted to the program honors students will complete a double major in Journalism Honors and Journalism. In addition to meeting the requirements for the journalism major, the honors student must complete J499 (one hour) taken in conjunction with two advanced journalism courses, J499 (one hour) taken in conjunction with one advanced course in an approved secondary discipline, and J499 (one hour) taken in conjunction with J485. The honors student must present a research paper at an undergraduate or professional conference or have the paper published in a journal. Finally, honors students must maintain the 3.3 GPA in all courses and the 3.5 GPA in journalism courses. Political Science Honors Program. Admission to the Political Science Honors Program requires the following: the student must be a political science major with junior standing; the student must have at least a 3.3 GPA in all courses and at least a 3.5 GPA in political science courses; and the student must have completed 15 hours of political science courses including Y205. Once admitted to the program, honors students will complete a double major in Political Science Honors and Political Science. In addition to meeting the requirements for the political science major, the honors student must complete Y498 (one hour) taken in conjunction with three advanced political science courses and Y498 (one hour) taken in conjunction with Y490. The honors student must present a research paper at an undergraduate or professional conference or have the paper published in a journal. Finally, honors students must maintain the 3.3 GPA in all courses and the 3.5 GPA in political science courses. Sociology Honors Program. Admission to the Sociology Honors Program requires the following: the student must be a sociology major with junior standing; and the student must have a 3.3 GPA in all courses. Once admitted to the program, honors students will complete a double major in Sociology Honors and Sociology. In addition to meeting the requirements for the sociology major, the honors student must complete S495 (one hour) in conjunction with three advanced sociology courses and S498 (one hour) taken in conjunction with S470. Finally, honors students must maintain the 3.3 GPA in all courses.
