WELCOME

  • Staff Council President, Steven Clark, convened the meeting at 10:30 a.m. and welcomed the Council members.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT

  • Christine Thompson, Staff Council Treasurer, reported on the budget.  The figures are listed above.

 

NEW BUSINESS

  • The March 19 Staff Council meeting will be held in the Ogle Center.  The location for the meeting is to be announced.  Kelly Scott, Box Office Supervisor, would like the opportunity to promote what the Ogle Center has to offer to staff, talk about volunteer usher opportunities at shows, and give a tour of the Ogle facilities.  The possibility of a staff orientation being scheduled, similar to the orientation that was conducted in the workout facilities in Athletics, may be possible. 

 

  • Staff Council sponsored an orientation of the Athletic facilities on Friday, February 14.  The orientation was facilitated by Denny Williams, Assistant Director of Athletics.  The attendance was lower than expected; however, the weather was not very good that day.  Notable items from the orientation: Most of the exercise equipment is new or newer; best times to visit the facility are early morning, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon; there are locker rooms available just for staff; spouses of staff can join the Grenadier Club to gain access to the facilities. http://www.iusathletics.com/f/Grenadier_Club.php

     

    • Any staff that would still like the opportunity to participate in an orientation of the Athletics building and its facilities can contact any member of Staff Council or send an email to sestaff@ius.edu.

       

       

  • Staff Council is currently in discussion regarding a proposal to have a recognition award for clerical, technical, and service maintenance staff that would be similar to the campus’s Distinguished Service Award, which would be presented on behalf of Staff Council.  A subcommittee consisting of Steven Clark, Cari Edwards, Jennifer Hershfield, Mary Ann Wild, and Annette Wernert will collaborate to develop a purpose statement and procedures for nominating, awarding, and presenting the award.

     

  • Steven distributed the final human resources needs analysis report from Dana Wavle, Vice Chancellor for Administration & Finance.  The vice chancellor met with approximately 20 individuals and groups on campus who were considered major stakeholders of the campus human resources function.  The meetings took place from October 2013 through December 2013. 

     

  • One long-standing function of Staff Council has been to send a letter of welcome to new staff.  Staff Council is considering modifying this function.  The Council would like to get out to meet the new staff in person and provide them with a warm welcome as well as information about Staff Council and ways the Council represents and assists staff.  Christine Thompson will be in contact with Human Resources on a monthly basis to identify new clerical/technical/service maintenance staff.  If there are new staff to be welcomed, Christine will send an Outlook invitation to the Staff Council to go out to the various departments to welcome the new staff.  All Council members that are available for the “walk around” will be invited and encouraged to attend.  The Council will distribute information about Staff Council to the new staff at that time.  Steven, Jennifer, and Angie will collaborate to develop new informational materials for the Staff Council welcome.

     

  • Steven Clark is a member of the Campus Budgetary Advisory Group (CBAG).  At CBAG’s last meeting, a list of budgetary recommendations for FY15 was developed.  These recommendations will be voted on to establish priority levels at CBAG’s next meeting on February 26.  The chairs of CBAG, Executive Vice Chancellor Uric Dufrene and Vice Chancellor Dana Wavle encouraged the members of CBAG to share the recommendations with their colleagues to gain feedback so that when the group assigns priorities to the recommendations, they are doing so with the input of their colleagues.  Steven distributed the recommendations to the members of the Staff Council to solicit feedback.  One recommendation that Staff Council agreed was a high priority is “Improve employee retention through establishing equality in staff salaries, creating opportunities for salary growth, and incentivizing professional development (e.g., fee courtesy).”

 

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:20 a.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. in the Ogle Center, with the exact location to be announced.
