Policies & Regulations
Drugs & Alcohol
Federal law, Indiana state law, and University regulations prohibit the use, possession, and/or distribution of narcotics or dangerous drugs without a valid prescription. Use, possession, and/or distribution of all forms of alcoholic beverages is also prohibited in and on all University property. Violators of these policies are subject to the provisions of applicable federal and state laws as well as University disciplinary actions.
The 1998 Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965 require suspension of financial aid eligibility for students who have been convicted of any offense under any federal or state law involving the possession or sale of a controlled substance. The ineligibility period will be determined based upon whether the conviction was for possession or sale and if it was the first, second, or third offense. Ineligibility periods begin from the date of the conviction. In certain circumstances, participation in a rehabilitation program may re-instate eligibility. Final guidelines regarding this legislation are currently being developed. Current and prospective students affected by this title are asked to discuss their circumstances with the Director of Financial Aid.
Firearms
Firearms are prohibited from all IU Southeast buildings and property, regardless of whether or not the owner has a valid state permit to carry a firearm. The only exception to this is an appointed law enforcement officer, who may possess a firearm on campus.
Tobacco-Free
Smoking is prohibited in all buildings on campus. Violations of this policy should be reported to the University Police office.
Access to Buildings
When classes are in session, most buildings are open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. When classes are not in session, the buildings are only opened for scheduled events or meetings. No students are allowed in the buildings after hours unless they possess an After Hours Facility Permit to be in a specific area.
Special events or programs may allow groups to be in an building after hours based upon prior approval and notification to the University police. Any unauthorized persons found in a building after hours will be identified and escorted from said building.
How to Obtain an After Hours Facility Permit
There are times when students may need to be in a building after hours to work on a special project. A student’s instructor may authorize a student to be in a building after hours to complete a special project or assignment. Instructors shall follow these procedures when requesting access for a student:
- The instructor/director shall submit to University Police a request for access by email. The request should include the following information:
- Students full name and student ID number
- Building name
- Area or Room(s) authorized to be in
- Date(s) student is authorized to be in area
Example: fall semester 2008, any time after building closes or March 1 through March 7- Instructor’s phone number in case of emergency
Requests can also be made at University Police by filling out an After Hours Request Form. Requests will not be accepted over the telephone.
After the request(s) is received by University Police, an After Hours Facility Permit will be issued to the student(s). The student shall pick up the permit at the University Police office. The student must show an IU Southeast student ID card before a permit is issued.
Students shall not work with life threatening materials, while alone. This is the responsibility of the faculty who supervise student projects to assure that if a student is to be working with life threatening material, the work is done at their presence or the presence of another IU Southeast employee who is authorized by the faculty.
Students may not bring a guest or children with them when accessing a building after hours. Only students with permits will be allowed access.
After a student has been given access to a building after hours, the student should call University Police to report when they are leaving the building. Campus phones are available inside the building to use.
Do not use an emergency telephone for this purpose.
Safety Precautions
- Students accessing a building after hours should remain in their authorized area.
- If you are using a classroom, meeting room, computer lab, or office after hours, you should secure the door while occupying the room if possible.
- Carry a cell phone with you
- Know where the emergency phones and campus phones are located inside the building.
- Call University Police when you leave and secure the door behind you. Make sure the building exterior door secures when you exit the building.
The campus police routinely check outside lighting and report any problems to the Physical Plant for repair. Lighting for the campus is regulated by a photo cell and normally comes on about one-half hour before dark and remains on until about one-half hour after daylight. The maintenance department inspects and services all building locks and doors on a regular basis. The grounds personnel trim the shrubs on campus to a height that will not create hazards or visibility problems for vehicle or pedestrian traffic.
Access to Lodges
Only persons connected to the campus community can have access, or request Access to the Residential Lodges. The Director of their affiliation should send an email to Accounting Services, requesting access. Access to the lodges will only be granted to those whom the Director of Residential Housing or the Police Department allow access. In addition, the Chancellor or Administrative Council may grant access if they so determine. Our students privacy and residential life experience, is of utmost importance and will be safe guarded.
