Reporting Crime
Crime victims, regardless of how seemingly insignificant the crime, are encouraged to report the incident to the IU Southeast Police immediately. To report a crime, the victim or witness needs only to call the Police phone number (812 941-2400), use one of the emergency phones, or come to the Police office (UC 027). Each month, these incidents are categorized and reported to the FBI. Crime alerts may be posted on bulletins boards around campus or placed in various University publications. University employees will assist a student in notifying the police if requested. The University Police will assist the student in notifying local police if needed of off campus incidents.
Sex Offenses
The IU Southeast Police department, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and other University departments conduct presentations and distribute written materials to promote awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, and other sex offenses. All sex offenses should be reported immediately to the University Police (UC 027, 941-2400), local or state law enforcement officials, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, or other appropriate University personnel.
If you are raped or sexually assaulted:
- Get to a safe place immediately.
- Preserve all physical evidence (do not bathe, douche, use the toilet, or change clothing).
- Notify the University Police, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, or other appropriate University personnel even if you are unsure about filing charges.
- Obtain necessary medical attention as soon as possible. (The University Police will assist you with this.)
- If you wish, call a close friend or other trusted person to accompany you during your interview with the police.
- Use the counseling services offered by the University and/or community agencies. (The University Police can provide you with this information.)
Victims of rape or sexual assault may rearrange their academic schedule to the extent that the changes are reasonably available. The University may provide some recommendations on your living situation.

Sex and Violent Offender Registry
Effective January 1, 2003, Zachary's Law requires sheriff departments to jointly establish and maintain the Indiana Sheriff's Sex Offender Registry to provide detailed information about individuals who register as sex or violent offenders at Indiana sheriff departments (or, in Marion County, the Indianapolis Police Department). The purpose of the registry is to inform the general public about the identity, location, and appearance of sex and violent offenders who live, work, or study in Indiana. (NOTE: The photographs and addresses of registered sex and violent offenders cannot be presented on this site until the Indiana Supreme Court decides on a pending case relating to the publication of this information.)
In addition to the detailed information about registered offenders, Zachary's Law requires the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to keep Indiana's Sex and Violent Offender Directory, a list of all offenders convicted of a sex or violent crime. The directory can be accessed on the internet at www.in.gov/serv/cji_sor. Due to our close proximity to the State of Kentucky, its Sex/Criminal Offender web site can be accessed through http://kspsor.state.ky.us. If you have any questions about these registries, please contact the IU Southeast Police department at ext. 2400 or stop by the office in UC 027.
