Guidelines for Internal Grants and Fellowships

Use the following guidelines to draft an application for an internal grant or fellowship. Provide the specified information in the sequence given using the headings below. Use as much space as needed. Submit completed applications to the Dean for Research at lhh@ius.edu.

  1. Details of the Project
    1. Character and scope including explicit statement of research hypothesis/question or creative problem.
    2. Detailed method and plan of work.
    3. Presumable scholarly significance (place project in context; cite relevant literature).
    4. Application or relation of possible results from these investigations to more general problems in the field. (Provide this information only if it differs from C. above.)
    5. When commenced, progress to date, and expectation as to completion and publication.
    6. Assessment of the likelihood that this project will lead, directly or indirectly, to external funding.
  2. Qualifications of the Applicant:
    1. Applicant's special competence for this project (background, training, preparation).
    2. Papers published or presented by the applicant bearing upon this subject.
    3. Other publications by the applicant.
    4. References (give name, title, and address). Letters of reference should be sent directly to the Office of Academic Affairs. A letter from the Dean and at least one additional letter from an internal or external colleague are required in all cases. Letters should address the strengths of the project and applicant(s).
  3. Previous Research Funding:
    1. Faculty Grant-in-Aid of Research and/or Student Assistance Grant (give dates and descriptions of resulting productivity).

    4. Other sources and amounts of support for research you have received in the last five years.
  4. Other Relevant Information, if any:
    1. Applicants for Summer Faculty Fellowship requesting time to prepare proposals for external funding, should provide details of the application procedures.
    2. Persons applying for both Summer Faculty Fellowship and Grant-in-Aid at the same time should indicate the extent to which each of the awards is essential to the project.
    3. Applicants for support for student assistance should specify the role and qualifications of the student(s).

Any requests for funds for such items must be strongly justified by the applicant. Funds for student assistants may be included in grant-in-aid budgets; minor incidental expenses may be added to student assistant grant budgets.
    3. Applicants for Grant-in-Aid to support sabbatical leave research should indicate whether the sabbatical project can be completed without Grant-in-Aid funds.
