The School of Arts and Letters minors are listed below as well as information about the IU Southeat BASES Program.
BASES Program
BASES stands for Business + Arts & Sciences + Education + Society. It's a new way for students to combine skills, talents, convictions and interests in ways that make them better able to succeed in today's cross-disciplinary working world.
BASES allows you to pursue a minor in another School or discipline to round out your degree, providing you with additional career options and paths post-graduation. Learn more about how your major pairs with a minor in another area of study by visiting the BASES website.
Minor in Art History
The minor in Art History is open to all students who have an interest in the history of art regardless of their major. At least 18 credit hours are required, including A 101 Ancient and Medieval Art, A 102 Renaissance Through Modern Art, A 458 Topics in the Ethnographic Arts, plus a minimum of three other courses above the 200 level. At least one of these additional courses must cover a European, Euro-American, or Euro-Australian topic. At least one must concentrate on the arts of an indigenous people (e.g., Native American, African, South Pacific, or Asian). Art history minors must meet with a Fine Arts departmental advisor for program planning.
Minor in Communication
To earn a minor in Communication, a student must complete 15 credit hours. Minors must complete the two classes listed immediately below and three additional classes in communication; two of the three must be at the 300 level or above.

Creative Writing Minor & Certificate
Policies:
- All courses and prerequisites fulfilling the requirements for minors or certificates in English must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- The overall GPA for any English minor or certificate must be 3.0.
- English majors may count no more than two online and/or correspondence courses toward the minor or certificate. Students may request departmental consent for exception.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge of Craft Terms and Concepts: The student will become knowledgeable in essential craft terms and concepts in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction.
- Competency in Creative Writing: The student will develop competency in creating original works in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction.
- Competency in Revision: The student will be able to meaningfully revise original creative writing and incorporate suggestions from peers and instructors.
- Competency in Critiquing Creative Writing: The student will learn to meaningfully critique drafts of other student writers applying craft terms and concepts, participate in workshops, and prepare workshop reports.
- Competency in Analyzing Creative Writing: The student will be able to analyze works by major authors of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction in analytic essays and scholarly articles.
- Appreciation of Literature and Literary Culture: The student will develop aesthetic values and appreciate literature and literary culture by reading important works and analyzing them, participating in university and community events featuring readings and lectures, participating in the university and community literary scene, and attending cross-cultural and cross-media events such as plays and gallery shows, to understand the interrelatedness of the arts.
Creative Writing Minor Requirements
The Creative Minor requires a total of eighteen (18) credit hours with a minimum grade of a C in each class.

Minor in Education
The Secondary Education Minor is open to all majors for those the School of Education is approved to license (i.e. English, History, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology). This gives undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in a career as a teacher in Indiana/Kentucky, based on state licensing requirements.
The program allows students to complete a teaching credential program while majoring in a related program (i.e. fine arts-theatre, Spanish, economics, geography, natural sciences) or any academic area in which the state offers a content area exam that the School of Education has approval to license. The Secondary Education Minor for teacher licensure has the same program acceptance requirements for students minoring in Education, as well as, students majoring in Education.

Admissions Requirements
To be admitted to the Secondary Education Program (SEP), candidates must meet all the requirements for Summative Decision Point I as listed below:
- Completed EDUC-M 300 and earned a grade of at least 2.0 (C)
- Possess an overall GPA of at least 2.75
- Possess at least a grade of 2.0 (C) in each course in the licensing area(s) and an overall average in each licensing area of at least 2.75
- Have passing scores on the CASA or other Indiana approved alternatives (ACT/SAT)
- Have positive recommendations from the EDUC-M 300 instructor or equivalent diversity course instructor
- Submit a completed application to the SEP with a copy of the official CASA or Indiana Approved Alternative test scores

The interdisciplinary minor in leadership provides students with an opportunity to develop fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to assume leadership, supervisory or management positions in private companies and nonprofit organizations.

Minor in Music Recording and Production
The Minor in Music Recording provides students with the opportunity to obtain knowledge and experience in audio production and allows those who want to obtain a degree in a different discipline, or do not have a formal music background, with a concentration in Audio Production. Students in other areas of the music program, such as music business, music education, performance or composition would also benefit from the additional expertise obtained through this minor.

Minor in Philosophy
By completing 15 credit hours in philosophy, including 3 credit hours in logic and 9 credit hours at the 200 level or above, students can receive a minor in philosophy. Minoring in philosophy offers students working toward another major the opportunity to expand their studies and inform their work in other disciplines. It gives students a chance to address some of the ethical questions that will undoubtedly arise within the context of their chosen field, as well as to gain a stronger grasp of the philosophical and historical elements that contribute to the foundations of their discipline. In addition, minoring in philosophy helps the student to sharpen his or her analytic skills and to achieve a greater cultural awareness.
Minor in Professional Writing
IU Southeast graduates seeking employment will benefit greatly from the skills learned in the Professional Writing Minor offered by the English Department, including the ability to work in teams and to analyze, communicate, and create information across a wide range of professional writing, such as business writing, technical report writing, writing for online media, and writing for publications such as magazines and brochures. A 2009 survey of employers conducted by the American Association of Colleges and Universities found that the employers surveyed valued the knowledge offered by this minor, which is open to students from any major.

Minor in Supervision
The General Studies Program at Indiana University Southeast offers a certificate as well as a minor in supervision. The minor consists of 24 credit hours. Students, who complete the Certificate in Supervision, can also complete the Minor in Supervision by completing 6 additional credit hours. Students may select the 6 addition credit hours from four different areas.
