Professional Interests

Teaching

At IUS I teach Secondary Education - Science and Mathematics. Previously I taught graduate and undergraduate courses in mathematics and education as well as chaired 5 PhD’s in Mathematics Education. I began my teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, West Africa, and then taught Middle School Mathematics in Southern Indiana. In 2005 I received NIU’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award.

In my first year at IUS, I was presented the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Max Beberman Award – the State’s highest recognition for leadership and excellence in mathematics teacher education.  I received the 2018 Greater Louisville Council of Teachers of Mathematics Helen Cunningham Educator Award for Excellent in the Teaching of Mathematics.

Research

I have diversity of coauthors – from single authorship to fellow mathematics education researchers and graduate students to educational psychologists to engineering professors and classroom teachers. I investigate and publish empirical mathematics education research and add writings for the dissemination of research for the teacher-practitioner.  My research agenda involves mixed-methods studies with graduate students and faculty on learning in the content area; action research with elementary and middle school students and teachers on reflective writing in problem solving; and curricula design and classroom assessment with university personnel and secondary teachers.
