Biography

Cliff Staten received his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1987 from the University of North Texas.  He is currently Professor of Political Science and International Studies.  He served as Dean of the School of Social Sciences from 1998 through July 2010.  He is a member of the IU Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and is the recipient of the IUS Distinguished Teaching Award, the IUS Distinguished Research Award, the IUS Chancellor’s Diversity Award, and the Karl Metz Award for Distinguished Service to the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences.  Cliff has traveled and studied throughout Mexico and Central America/Caribbean with a special focus on Nicaragua and Cuba.  He has also traveled throughout southern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Europe.  He teaches advanced courses on Latin American politics, US foreign policy, international political economy, and terrorism.  Cliff directs the IUS Model UN program.  He has written numerous scholarly articles on a variety of topics including Latin America, US foreign policy, and terrorism.  He has written two books: The History of Cuba 2nd edition (ABC-CLlO, 2015, first edition published in 2003) and The History of Nicaragua (ABC-CLIO, 2010).  His most recent research focuses on the decision making processes of terrorist groups including Hezbollah and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia.
