Biography

Susanna Crum is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Southeast, where she serves as area head of the Printmaking program. She received an MA and MFA in Printmaking with minors in Sculpture and Intermedia from the University of Iowa, and a BFA in Printmaking from Cornell University. She served as President of the Mid America Print Council, 2018-2020. Her work, which often draws from community-based interviews and archival research, has been featured in international and national exhibitions at venues such as the 1078 Gallery, Chico, CA; Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, Cincinnati, OH; the Carnegie Center for Art and History, New Albany, IN; the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Louisville, KY; the Kentucky Derby Museum, Louisville, KY; and the Liu Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai, China. In 2016, Susanna created artwork as visiting artist at Edinburgh Printmakers studio, Edinburgh, Scotland, and her work was selected for inclusion in the 9th International Printmaking Biennial, Douro 2018 in Portugal. Recent projects have been supported by Indiana University Southeast, the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the Carnegie Center for Art and History. Her collaborative architectural video projections with Tiffany Carbonneau, head of the Digital Art and Interactive Media area at IU Southeast, have been supported by the Fund for the Arts, Louisville, KY, the Art and Heritage Initiative, Chicago, IL, and the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Susanna returned to her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky to start the city’s first fine art print studio, Calliope Arts, with fellow printmaker Rodolfo Salgado. In 2013, she was the recipient of the inaugural M.A. Hadley Prize for Visual Arts, which supported the studio's research and development. Since its opening in 2015, Calliope Arts has provided emerging and professional artists access to equipment for etching, engraving, relief, alternative photographic processes, lithography, and screen printing, as well as opportunities for classes and exhibitions. Susanna has recently served as guest curator for Interventions: Re-Framing the Printed Image at 21c Museum, Louisville, KY; juror for 10x10x10xTieton International Exhibition, Tieton, WA; and her essay “Brick by Brick: Creative Entrepreneurship After Graduation” was published in the Mid America Print Council Journal in early 2016. In 2017, she will serve as panel chair for Crossroads: Intersections and Interventions at the Southern Graphics Council International conference. Susanna co-coordinated the 2016 Mid-America Print Council conference, which was co-hosted by Indiana University Southeast and the University of Louisville and brought 500 printmakers from the US and Canada to the Southern Indiana area for panel discussions, demonstrations, and exhibitions.
