Biography

J.R. STUART is an actor/director/playwright who has been blessed to be a resident actor at Derby Dinner Playhouse for 29 years. A veteran of over 350 productions, Stuart has traveled across the United States and Canada in the national tours of BRIGADOON (Beaton), CHICAGO (Amos) and GIGI (Honore Lachailles). His own one-man literary portrait as Twain in THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK has been performed in colleges, theatre and churches all over the country. Favorite Derby Dinner Playhouse roles include Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY, Ben Franklin in 1776, Willie in THE SUNSHINE BOYS, and Frank in OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS. Other favorites include Mickey in THE NORMAL HEART, Dysart in EQUUS, Artie in THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, Stage Manager in OUR TOWN, and President Truman in GIVE 'EM HELL, HARRY!

As Artistic Director for Stage on Spring at St. Marks United Church of Christ, he has produced and directed plays that move the world forward in love, including THE ELEPHANT MAN, MASS APPEAL, ORDINARY PEOPLE, ALMOST, MAINE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, THE DRESSER, and ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT'S END.  All proceeds go directly to St. Marks’ Soup Kitchen which serves over 175+ every Saturday. This mission is closest to his heart. He has also directed Equity productions (25h ANNUAL PUTNAM CO. SPELLING BEE, DIXIE SWIM CLUB, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE: Beef & Boards) and regional productions (ZERO HOUR: Springfield Contemporary Theatre, TO BURY CAESAR: Regional Tour, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, GREATER TUNA: Palms Theatre, Mesa) and many local productions including COCK and THRILL ME for Pandora, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER and YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU for CLT, and TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE for Bunbury.

As faculty member of the Arts Institute, he has enjoyed coaching a wide range of actors -from children to professionals. Whether preparing for an audition, finding the right monologue, gearing up for college auditions or simply desiring to enhance your public speaking or stage performance, Private Coaching for the Actor is a fun, positive and productive way to have a coach meet you at your level and improve your skills.
