Biography

Dr. Jeramy A. Nichols is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Choral Music at Indiana University Southeast where he oversees and advises the Choral and Music Education programs. He teaches private vocal lessons to majors and non-majors of vocal music, Rudiments of Music, Conducting, Choral Conducting, and directs the Indiana University Southeast Concert Choir and Community Chorus. Dr. Nichols earned a Ph.D. and Masters of Music in Music Education with a Choral Conducting concentration from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Vocal Music Performance with concentrations in Choral Music Education and Church Music Ministry from Olivet Nazarene University.

Previously, Dr. Nichols was the Director of Choral Music at University Liggett School in the Metro Detroit area. He held prior positions as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University Florida, Gainesville, Florida. At Santa Fe College, Dr. Nichols taught Music Appreciation courses and was the Assistant Conductor of the Santa Fe Singers, the top premier choral ensemble. Dr. Nichols worked closely with Dr. Russell Robinson in the Advanced Choral Methods and Techniques course, Secondary Music Education Methods (Choral) for grades 7-12 course, and was the Assistant Director of the University of Florida Invitational Choral Festival while completing his graduate studies at the University of Florida. He observed students in their field experience placements with local music educators in Gainesville, Florida and observed and mentored student teachers within Florida public school districts.

Dr. Nichols has taught in public, private, parochial, and independent K-12 schools in Indiana, Florida, Michigan, and England. He directed and assisted with eleven different musical theater productions, and in 2009 assisted with a performance tour of Germany (Leipzig, Dresden, and Berlin). Spring 2011, Dr. Nichols conducted Palmer Trinity School's String Orchestra in Miami, Florida and again in Beijing and Shanghai during their performance tour of China. In June 2013, Dr. Nichols joined the faculty at TASIS: The American School in England and taught a six-week summer music course to middle and high school boarding students.

Dr. Nichols has been the recipient of the David Wilmot Prize for Excellence in Music Education in 2013 at the University of Florida and was awarded the University of Florida Invitational Choral Festival Leadership award in October, 2014. He assists with local choral music educators, is an active national and regional choral clinician, and has presented at state level conferences. His affiliations are Florida Music Education Association, Indiana Music Educators Association, Kentucky Music Educators Association, NAfME: National Association for Music Educators, American Choral Directors Association, and Delta Epsilon Iota. Dr. Nichols’s major research interests include music teacher education, choral music education, the improvement of sight-singing skills, and the influence of popular music within quality high school choral programs.
