Biography

Robin Smith, mezzo-soprano, has performed as concert soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Britten’s Mass in Times of War, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart's Coronation Mass, and Mahler's Kindertotenlieder.  Her principal operatic roles include Mrs. Peachum in the Beggar's Opera, Maurya in Riders to the Sea, The Third Lady in The Magic Flute, The Girl in Trouble in Tahiti, and Mrs. Nolan in The Medium with supporting roles in Les Contes d'Hoffmann and Rigoletto.  She has also participated in masterclasses with composers William Bolcom and Jake Heggie as well as vocal performers Ewa Podlés, Nancy Gustafson, and Joan Morris.

Dr. Smith earned both a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Louisville and completed a Doctor of Music in Vocal Performance degree with a music education minor from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where she studied under Professor Patricia Havranek.

She has taught Applied Voice, Lyric Diction (English, French, German, and Italian), Opera Theatre, Introduction to Music Education, and Elementary Music Methods at Southwest Baptist University.  Previous academic appointments include Lamar University, the University of Louisville, DePauw University, and Indiana University where she also served as Coordinator of the Secondary Voice Department. 

As an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, many of her students were winners in the undergraduate vocal audition categories.  She was also a presenter on The Mélodies of Cécile Chaminade: Hidden Treasures for Vocal Performance and Pedagogy for the Central Region National Association of Teachers of Singing.  Smith has compiled, translated, and written a foreword for the Duets of Cécile Chaminade, published in 2014 by Recital Publications and distributed by Classical Vocal Reprints.

Dr. Smith is also an instructor of voice and piano for the Little Flock Academy of Arts and conducts vocal masterclasses at local and regional high schools.
