The Office of the Bursar welcomes you and your student to IU Southeast. We know that paying the tuition bill can be a daunting experience, so we are here to assist you.

An official university bill will be mailed the week of about 4 weeks before the start of the semester. When your student receives the bill, he/she will be eligible for a personal deferment option. The deferment option will allow you or the student to make up to 4 installment payments due throughout the semester. The cost to do this is $15 per deferment for a total of $45 for the semester.

Below is a list of tips for making the payment process as smooth as possible:

  1. Sign up as an authorized payer. If you are going to be paying the bill instead of the student, have your student set you up as an authorized payer. It is the best way to make payments online and ensure that you will have access to your student’s bill.
  2. Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees & other penalties. Late payment fees of 1.5% of the outstanding balance accumulate monthly.
  3. Have your student read all e-mails and other information from our office. These e-mails will be sent directly to the student at their IU Southeast e-mail address as e-mail is the official means of communication for the entire university.
  4. Always have your student review the refund periods online before dropping a class. Students may still owe for all or a portion of a dropped class if dropped after the semester has started. The refund schedule can be found online at the Office of the Bursar refunds page.
  5. Have your student sign up for Direct Deposit to receive any refunds faster. Students typically receive their credit balance electronically 1-2 weeks before receiving a paper check in the mail. A credit balance will be denoted by a 'CR' after the balance due on your student’s bill.

Parental access to student records

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), when a student turns 18 years of age or attends a post-secondary institution, the student, and not the parent, may access, seek to amend, and consent to disclosures of his or her education records. Students who wish to authorize access to their confidential student record information may use the Third Party Access feature available in Self Service. In rare circumstances, the University may invoke the FERPA exception, which allows the institution to provide information to parents if the parent can prove their student is dependent by IRS standards. This includes data stored by the Office of the Bursar including details regarding a student’s bursar bill. We can always discuss account information with the student or with a combination of a student and parent. We are unable to give out detailed information on a student’s bursar bill without the student being present.

For more information regarding FERPA, please visit the Office of the Registrar.
