Description

IUPUI is partnering with six other IU campuses on an Indiana Kids Grant. This collaboration provides free mentoring and tutoring to students' grades 6-12, as well as access to and participation in workshops and activities hosted at many of the Indiana University Campuses. 


Mentoring will take place primarily through online contact with opportunities for some in-person connections where at minimum weekly contact takes place between mentor and mentee/s. As an IU student this is a great way to get involved in your community; impact the lives of local youth; and gain extraordinary skills and experience.


The role of an Indiana Kids mentor is to provide guidance, support, and advice on academic, college, and career goals, as well as, discuss positive choices with decisions students face at school, home, and work. Additionally, mentors are expected to build strong relationships with students they support, and assist in students' college and career readiness. 


Mentor Duties and Responsibilities:


- Be able to commit to spending at least a semester in a mentoring relationship with a group of middle and high school students.


- Responsible for communicating/connecting with the assigned mentee/s weekly as well as assist with the planning and facilitating of monthly college and career readiness workshops.


- Serve as a positive role model/example by modeling desirable behaviors such as patience, empathy, accountability, goal setting, and reflective listening.


- Act as a resource/partner and guide for ideas and concerns regarding students' academic and personal growth and development. 


- Accept and relate to youth who may or may not share similar lifestyle and values.


- Respect mentee's right to self-determination and independence. 


- Must have the ability to communicate promptly with Indiana Kids campus point of contact via text, email, and other co-working web based applications.


- Work closely with Indiana Kids team through phone contact, personal conferences, and group meetings.


Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in courses at an IU Southeast.
- Preferred cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Must be signed up for EDUC-M314 and EDUC-M301 Practicum to qualify.
- Skilled in problem solving and communication (verbal and written).
- Commit to at least 1 semester in this position.
- Must be patient, empathetic, and willing to try to new ways of connecting with middle and high school students.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with students, families, and school personnel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of students and families.
- Ability to listen actively and ask questions as needed to determine the students' needs.
- Ability to conduct yourself in a professional manner while embracing the quality and diversity of all students and staff.
- Preferred experience in tutoring and mentoring middle, high school, or college level students.
