Why Study the Educational Leadership License Program?

The Educational Leadership License provides opportunity for candidates to gain their principal certification.

The ED Leadership Program at IU Southeast offers interested candidates a licensure program to receive their principal certification. The program currently consists of ten (10) courses for thirty (30) credit hours. It is a licensure program and not a degree program. Candidates who are accepted into the program will begin their coursework in the Summer or Fall semesters. Kentucky candidates may apply the hours toward a Rank I.

  • Indiana application’s must hold a master’s degree or be enrolled in the Master’s Program at IU Southeast.
  • Kentucky applications must hold a master’s degree to be considered for acceptance. Kentucky candidates may apply hours toward a Rank I with additional coursework that is appropriate for school leaders. The additional coursework must be approved by the Kentucky advisor.
  • Application Deadlines: June 1 and February 1

Applications submitted by June 1: Applicant will be notified of the decision of their application by July 1 and may begin coursework in August.

Applications submitted by February 1: Applicant will be notified of the decision of their application by March 1 and may begin coursework in May.

Admission Process

For candidates admitted after 7/15/2011 who do not earn credit for course work at IU Southeast during any one-year period will be required to meet new requirements in effect when they resume their course work at IU Southeast. Candidates with a two-year gap in coursework must meet with an advisor and reapply for admission.

  1. Attend a mandatory program advising session. Dates may be found here…link to calendar?
  2. Complete online application. A $40 application fee is assessed when applying to program. If a previous application fee was paid the fee should be waived. To determine if fee is to be waived, please contact our Record Specialist.

  3. In the Personal Statement area of the online application, upload an essay that explains why you want to be a building level administrator, how you have impacted student learning and how you have served as a school leader.
  4. Three letters of recommendation that address your leadership skills must be submitted. One must be from a current or recent supervisor. Use the Recommendation Tab on the online application to request electronically. If desired, letters may be mailed directly to Records Specialist.
  5. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A minimum 3.0 GPA must be reflected on all transcripts.
  6. Submit copy of current teaching license or state of eligibility. (Emergency license not acceptable.)

Candidates admitted after May 27, 2012 must complete the following courses and meet the program requirements as required by Indiana and Kentucky, if applicable.

Be admitted to both the Graduate Education Program and the Educational Leadership Program at IU Southeast.

  • Hold a valid classroom teaching license.
  • Completed the following course requirements:
    • EDUC H520 - Education and Social Issues
    • EDUC J500 - Instruction in the Context of Curriculum (3)
    • EDUC A500 - Introduction to Educational Leadership (3)
    • EDUC A510 - School-Community Relations (3)
    • EDUC A608 - Legal Perspectives on Education (3)
    • EDUC A625 - Administration of the Elementary School
    • EDUC A627 - Secondary School Administration (3) with transition assignments completed.
    • EDUC A635 - Public School Budgeting and Accounting (3)
    • EDUC A638 - Public School Personnel Management (3)
    • EDUC A695 - Practicum in School Administration (3 one-hour sections)

Attention Kentucky candidates: All coursework must be post-masters.
