Louisville Zoo

John Walczak resides in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Penn State University in 1978 with a B.S. in Animal Sciences. He began his zoo career 31 years ago as a keeper at Dreher Park Zoo in West Palm Beach, Fl. Walczak was brought to the Louisville Zoo in 1985 to design, build, and establish a collection for the Zoo's HerpAquarium. He has been instrumental in the growth of the Louisville Zoo for the past 25 years and has served as the Director since 2004.

In August 2010 he was presented the "Spirit of Yes" award at the Leadership Louisville Center's 2010 Mayor's Leadership Luncheon.

  • Chair of Arts & Cultural Attractions Board of Directors - 2009-11; vice-chair and board member since 2004
  • Bingham Fellows
  • Metro Partnership for Green Cities
  • Rotary member since 2004 with several committee involvements
  • Association of Zoos and Aquariums
  • Administration Committee, Development Committee, and 2020 Committee of St. Francis of Assisi Church
  • Volunteer in Jefferson County Public Schools "Every 1 Reads" program and "Middle School Connect" program
