Graduate Information

Go to your school administrative office or your advisor to get the graduation application. All students must apply for a degree/certificate, even if they do not plan to participate in Commencement. If you are pursuing degrees or certificates in different schools, you need to apply to both offices separately.

Example: Student getting a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Certificate in Information Technology submits separate graduation applications to the School of Business and the School of Natural Sciences.

For May and August candidates’ names to be included in the Commencement program, graduation applications degree must be filed and recorded on or before March 1.

Although students are not required to meet with an advisor before applying for graduation, many find it useful to have a graduation check meeting going into their last semester.

Order your cap, gown, and academic regalia

commencement forrageresStudents receiving campus honors will be notified in March before Commencement and invited to participate in the Honors Convocation, held annually on Thursday evening preceding Commencement on Monday. Students designated as achieving distinction (crimson cords), high distinction (white cords) and highest distinction (crimson-and-white cords combined) will receive their cords as they are recognized at the Honors Convocation.

Students who cannot attend the Honors Convocation on Thursday can pick up their cords in the Office of the Registrar, University Center South, Room 107 on the following Friday through Monday, day of Commencement, at noon. After that, students should report to the Registrar table at the Commencement venue to collect their honor cords.

Honor cords, also called fourragères, should be worn pinned to the left shoulder of your gown. Pin the fourragères halfway between the shoulder seam and the collar. The loop will drape over the outside of the sleeve with two cords hanging in front and two in back of the sleeve. Your arm should not go through the loop.

During Commencement

Graduates assemble at 5:30 p.m.

Graduates assemble at 5:30 p.m. in the Harold Workman North Wing Lobby - in full regalia. Gather where you see the free standing backdrops with your school’s (School of Business, School of Education, School of Nursing, etc.) name across the top. Master of Interdisciplinary Studies students gather with the School of Social Sciences. General Studies and Safety Management students gather with the School of Arts and Letters. Once assembled in your school's area, get your name card from the staff marshal. All graduates need a name card to hand to the announcer as they ascend to the stage.

The Office of the Registrar maintains an information and service table inside the main doors of the lobby during the assembly period. Here you can pick up honor cords not picked up at the Honors convocation, get help properly fitting your regalia (we maintain a supply of bobby- and safety pins), and make general inquiries about how the ceremony will proceed.

Similarly, the IU Southeast Bookstore maintains a booth at the venue, with IU-branded graduation accessories available for purchase; but where you may also pick-up late ordered regalia, if you have made prior arrangements with the bookstore management to do so.

Procession into the main hall begins promptly at 6:45 p.m. Do NOT leave any items in the robing rooms. The University is not responsible for any items left behind.

Depending on the number of graduates crossing the stage, the ceremony will be 2 - 3 hours long. Out of respect to others, and to maintain the integrity and decorum of this auspicious occasion, we ask that all participating graduates and faculty stay for the entire ceremony.
