Welcome to the Office for Community Engagement. This website offers information and resources for faculty, staff, students and community. It will serve as a base for connecting and working with individuals and groups seeking ideas, strategies, and support for academic service learning courses and short or long term commitments for community engagement projects. This office embraces the high impact educational practice of service learning and community-based learning. We believe that students should have the opportunity to apply what they are learning and to reflect on their service experiences. We acknowledge that giving back to the community and working with community partners prepares our students to be involved active citizens.

What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning is a course-based and field-based experiential instructional strategy with a community partner. It engages students in direct experiences with issues they are studying in the curriculum with opportunities to analyze and help solve problems in the community. Students apply what they are learning in real-world settings while employing ongoing reflection to draw connections between the service and course content. Because service-learning addresses actual community needs, it has the added potential to engage students in ways that other experiential methods may not. Service learning is good preparation for citizenship, work and life.

What is Community Engagement?

The Carnegie Foundation defines Community Engagement as the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.
