Fall 2014 3
As many of you well know, I assumed the role of seventh Chancellor of
Indiana University Southeast on July 1. I am settling in quite nicely—and my
wife transitioned easily once we confirmed the local grocery stores carried
collard greens—something a native of Northern Ireland just can’t appreciate.
I so appreciate all of you for your warm welcome to the IU Southeast family
over the last few weeks.
I am excited to kick off my first academic year at IU Southeast. With each day I
learn more about our campus – its history and strengths. This campus is solid,
and has great potential to serve this community as a first class educational
institution, a center of cultural and intellectual activity and an active partner
with other community stakeholders.
My goal over the next few months is to get to know this community—and to get us all to dream
big about IU Southeast. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, to share ideas and
listen to your feedback.
I hope to see you on campus – whether you come to attend a campus event or cheer on our
Grenadier student-athletes. I also hope you’ll invite me out into the community to get a firsthand
understanding of your organizations, businesses and activities.
IU Southeast’s mission is to “shape the future of our region by transforming good students into
great leaders, one graduate at a time.” I believe that by working together, we can build on the
traditions and strengths of our region, creating a bright future—a project in which I am humbled
to play a role.
Thank you again for welcoming me into the IU Southeast family. I look forward to learning from
