The Horizon’s look at homelessness featured in News and Tribune
Aprile Rickert, a recent IU Southeast graduate and former editor-
in-chief of the IU Southeast student publication, The Horizon,
wrote an in-depth story exposing the prevalence of homelessness
on college campuses.
Rickert’s story appeared in The Horizon and the News and
Tribune of Jeffersonville, Ind. The story was first published in The
Horizon’s April 13 issue. The News and Tribune then published the
story as part of its series, Facing Homelessness.
IU Southeast School of Education holds WIDA conference
More than 300 educators, administrators, and IU Southeast School of Education faculty and students attended the first WIDA
(formerly World-class Instructional Design and Advancement) Southern Indiana conference to learn strategies to implement
newWIDA standards and to teach students who are English Language Learners.
The educators and administrators came from four Southern Indiana school districts: New Albany Floyd County, Clarksville,
Greater Clark and West Clark. The school districts, the IU Southeast New Neighbors Center and the School of Education
partnered to develop the conference.
WIDA began in 2002, and it provides standards and resources that educators use to teach ELLs in preschool through 12th
grade. Indiana officially adopted the WIDA standards in December 2013.
IU Southeast celebrated its new
Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd
County Amphitheater with music,
magic and exhibits from the
Louisville Zoo and IU Southeast
Fine Arts Department during a
dedication ceremony on May 18.
The university hosted a free
outdoor Summer Pops Festival
that featured the IU Southeast
Orchestra, Concert Band and
Commonwealth Brass Band
performing patriotic music
throughout the evening.
The Horseshoe Foundation of
Floyd County gave $300,000 to
support the construction of the
amphitheater, which is located in
the Hickory lot behind the Ogle
IU Southeast celebrated its new Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County Amphitheatre with a Summer Pops
Festival in May.
