Legal Compliance Training
Programs and Workshops
All managers and supervisors are required to attend legal compliance training. The series consists of four workshops and related online reading assignments offered in collaboration with Human Resources and Academic Success. Descriptions of the workshops are listed below:
Legal Compliance Series: Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Labor Standards Act
This program educates participants about: the definitions of disability, who is a qualified person with a disability, university procedures for requesting an accommodation under the ADA, the importance of job descriptions to include essential functions, and employee responsibilities. This session also covers the provisions of the FLSA that govern record keeping, overtime, etc.
Legal Compliance Series: Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action
This program teaches participants the differences between affirmative action and equal employment opportunity. It provides legal definitions of discrimination and identifies groups that are legally protected by laws and/or university policies.
Legal Compliance Series: Family Medical Leave Act/Worker’s Compensation
This program educates participants on the eligibility provision of FMLA, identifies health conditions and health care providers, clarifies employee and supervisor responsibilities, and discusses FMLA implementation and administration. This program also defines Worker’s Compensation: who is covered, the process for making a claim, and available benefits.
Legal Compliance Series: Sexual Harassment/Retaliation
This program educates participants on the definition of sexual harassment: university policies and procedures regarding sexual harassment, issues of retaliation, how to recognize nonverbal, verbal, and physical harassment, how and where to report such incidents.

Preventing Sexual Harassment
This program educates students on the definition of sexual harassment: university policies and procedures regarding sexual harassment, issues of retaliation, how to recognize nonverbal, verbal and physical harassment, how and where to report such incidents.
Recruiting, Interviewing and Selecting New Employees
Co-led by Human Resources (Ann Lee) and Equity & Diversity (Darlene Young)
This program provides information for persons or departments recruiting new employees. Information will include what can and can’t be asked in interviews, EEOC guidelines and campus Affirmative Action goals, how to screen job applicants, and how to be sure candidates have the necessary skills.
Diversity – Organizational Development
This workshop delivers information and empowers employees to build and sustain diverse relationships. Participants will gain knowledge, understanding and awareness of human differences and discuss the impacts of stereotypical behavior.
Affirmative Action Monitor Training
Individual sessions can be scheduled to deliver information regarding the role and responsibilities of the Affirmative Action monitor. Topics of discussion include: AA/EEO laws/guidelines, IUS AA plan data, university mission and core values, and how to monitor and ensure equity in the recruitment process.
