Do you hold a bachelor's degree in a field other than teacher education, but wish to teach in secondary schools?

Our "Advance to Teaching" licensure program leads to teaching licensure for grades 5-12 in one of following content areas: Journalism, Language Arts/English (including Speech), Mathematics, Science (Chemistry, earth/Space, Life science, Physical Science and Physics), Social Studies (Economics, Geographical Perspectives, Government and Citizenship, Historical Perspectives, Psychology, and Sociology), French, German and Spanish. Other content areas available are P-12 Computer Education, Instrumental and General Music, Theater Arts, Vocal and General Music, Reading, and Teachers of English Learners.

Completing the "A2T" program and passing all required Indiana Department of Education exams will earn candidates an Indiana teaching license.

Participants can choose to add four additional courses to complete a master's degree. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Lisa Hoffman at lhh@ius.edu for information about the master’s degree courses.

Required Courses

The licensure program "Advance to Teaching" is a 24-credit program.

Candidates in the Advance to Teaching (A2T) Program are expected to:

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA with no grade less than a B in all required professional education courses;
  • Demonstrate the dispositions required by the School of Education;
  • Receive positive recommendations with no unsatisfactory ratings from instructors and cooperating teachers on final evaluations for all courses and field experiences;
  • Successfully complete Indiana CPR-AED certification requirements;
  • Successfully complete Indiana suicide prevention certification requirements;
  • Successfully complete Indiana Department of Education certification examination in the initial content area before licensure.
  • Successfully complete the Indiana Department of Education developmental pedagogy area assessment before licensure.

Students are admitted to A2T in January (spring semester) and/or April (summer semester). The program includes the following courses.

Admission Process

Applicants to the Advance to Teaching post-baccalaureate certificate must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution with a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale in the subject area or a related field that the individual intends to teach; or
  • A Master's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution; or
  • Both a baccalaureate degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution with a grade point average of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 point scale, and five (5) years of professional experience in the subject or a related area that the individual intends to teach

Application Process

  1. Attend a program advising session held each semester with the Coordinator of Secondary Advance to Teaching (A2T) or designee.
  2. Complete the online application to Graduate Studies at IU Southeast. A $40 application fee is assessed when applying to program. If a previous application fee was paid the fee should be waived. To determine if fee is to be waived, please contact Ms. Tracy Stracener, our Records Specialist at tstracen@iu.edu or (812) 941-2388.
  3. Two letters of recommendation are required. If you are a recent graduate you have the option of submitting the two letters from your instructors. Recent graduates and other applicants can submit letters from colleagues who are able to describe your work with youth. The letters can come from employers or anyone who can speak to your work ethic, teamwork, and experiences working with youth.
  4. On the Uploads tab, upload a personal statement that identifies your academic goals, career objectives and why you are applying to this program.
  5. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school.
