Elementary Education Concentrations

Students majoring in Elementary Education are required to have Concentration Courses totaling 15 credit hours within the 120-credit hour Bachelor of Science program. Concentrations are listed below. Consult the Elementary Education checksheet for specific course titles.

ENL/ESL

The concentration in English as a New Language/English as a Second Language (ENL/ESL) is for students who have an interest in influencing the success of English Learners (EL) in the academic content areas: grades K-5.

Language Arts

Our B.S. Ed. program offers a concentration in language arts for students who are interested in the areas of English/Language Arts; reading, writing, listening, speaking and media literacy for learners in grades K-5.

Mathematics

Our B.S. Ed. program offers a concentration in mathematics for students who have an interest in mathematics including: number sense, computation, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, data analysis and statistics for learners in grades K-5.

Science

Our B.S. Ed. program offers a concentration in science for students who have an interest in physical science, Earth and space science, life science, engineering, and computer science for learners in grades K-5.

Social Studies

Our B.S. Ed. program offers a concentration in social studies for students who have an interest in history, geography, civics and government, and economics for learners in grades K-5.

Elementary Education BSED - Social Studies Degree Map

Special Education

This dual certification program for both Elementary (K-5) and Special Education (P-12) Bachelor’s program prepares students to be successful in both the general education and the special education classroom. After completing the program and passing licensure exams, students will be certified to teach both elementary education and mild to moderate disabilities throughout P-12 schools in the Kentuckiana area.
