Are you ready to move ahead in your career and receive a salary boost while helping students with special gifts? Our Gifted and Talented license gives teachers the specialized credential they need to address the unique needs and abilities of this student population.

License Requirements – 12 Credit Hours

All courses are 3 credit hours unless otherwise noted.

The Gifted and Talented Education license at IU Southeast offers interested candidates a program of coursework toward an Indiana K-12 High Ability/Gifted and Talented certification. The program requires 12 credit hours of coursework.

Required Courses

  • EDUC-W 551 - Education and Psychology of the Gifted and Talented (online)
  • EDUC-W 552 - Curriculum for the Gifted and Talented (online)
  • EDUC-W 553 - Methods and Materials for the Gifted and Talented
  • EDUC-W 595 - Practicum in Gifted and Talented

*For EDUC-W 553 - Methods and Materials for the Gifted and Talented, this course can be substituted for other approved Gifted and Talented courses.

RANK 1 REQUIREMENTS FOR KENTUCKY – 24 CREDIT HOURS

All courses are 3 credit hours unless otherwise noted.

In addition to the required courses for Indiana teaching licensure, those seeking Rank 1 in Kentucky must take 4 additional courses from the following options (12 credit hours, for a total of 24 credit hours pertinent to Gifted and Talented education). Teachers must be licensed in Indiana before adding an endorsement to Kentucky license.

  • EDUC-W 551 - Education and Psychology of the Gifted and Talented (online)
  • EDUC-W 552 - Curriculum for the Gifted and Talented (online)
  • EDUC-W 553 - Methods and Materials for the Gifted and Talented
  • EDUC-W 560 - Topical Seminar in Gifted Education
  • EDUC-W 595 - Practicum in Gifted and Talented

Choose three courses from below

  • EDUC-K 500 - Topical Seminary in Special Education: Autism Spectrum
  • EDUC-K 563 - Learning Disabilities I
  • EDUC-L 524 - Language Education Issues in Bilingual and Multicultural Education
  • EDUC-L 530 - National Writing Project
  • EDUC-W 505 - Workshop: Teaching Coding in the Classroom or Using Technology with Problem-Based Learning

Other technology courses, high ability courses, pedagogy courses, or graduate courses outside of the School of Education with permission of program advisor.

Upgrade to a master's degree

You can choose to add your gifted and talented license to your M.S.Ed. degree, and/or you can add/take those courses while you are pursuing your M.S.Ed. degree.

Admission Process

The IU Southeast School of Education accepts applications on a rolling basis. Applications are accepted anytime and reviewed up until the week before the term begins.

  1. For advising questions about the Gifted and Talented license addition, contact Dr. Donna Albrecht at dalbrec@ius.edu or (812) 941-2594. You may request a phone, Zoom, or in-person advising meeting.
  2. Complete online application. The online application will prompt you for a brief personal statement and will ask you to upload a copy of current teaching license or statement of eligibility, if applicable for your program.
  3. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A 2.5 GPA for all undergraduate course work and a 3.0 GPA for all graduate course work is required.
  4. Please send sealed official transcripts to the Student Records Specialist at the following address:
