Are you ready to move ahead in your career and receive a salary boost while helping students with special gifts? Our Gifted and Talented license gives teachers the specialized credential they need to address the unique needs and abilities of this student population.

License Requirements – 12 Credit Hours

The Gifted and Talented Education license at IU Southeast offers interested candidates a program of coursework toward an Indiana K-12 High Ability/Gifted and Talented certification. The program requires 12 credit hours of coursework.

RANK 1 REQUIREMENTS FOR KENTUCKY – 24 CREDIT HOURS

In addition to the required courses for Indiana teaching licensure, those seeking Rank 1 in Kentucky must take 4 additional courses from the following options (12 credit hours, for a total of 24 credit hours pertinent to Gifted and Talented education). Teachers must be licensed in Indiana before adding an endorsement to Kentucky license.

Upgrade to a master's degree

You can choose to add your gifted and talented license to your M.S.Ed. degree, and/or you can add/take those courses while you are pursuing your M.S.Ed. degree.

Admission Process

  • All standards must be met at the proficiency level to be recommended for the license.
  • Additional testing is required for Kentucky licensing and may soon be a requirement in Indiana.

The IU Southeast School of Education accepts applications on a rolling basis. Applications are accepted anytime and reviewed up until ten days before the term begins.

  1. Carefully review all admission requirements for your program of interest. You are required to fill out the Advising Form and email it to Dr. Lisa Hoffman lhh@ius.edu. She will confirm receipt of the form, may ask additional information or request a phone conversation with you. If necessary, a meeting will be scheduled. For questions about the Master of Science in Education with a major in elementary education, contact Dr. Lisa Hoffman at lhh@ius.edu or (812) 941-2137. You may request to meet in person for advising.
  2. Complete online application. A $40 graduate application fee is assessed when applying to the program. If a previous graduate application fee was paid the fee may be waived.
  3. The online application will prompt you for a brief personal statement and will ask you to upload a copy of current teaching license or statement of eligibility, if applicable for your program.
  4. Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work completed at institutions other than an IU school. A 2.5 GPA for all undergraduate course work, 3.0 GPA for all graduate course work is required.
