Skills Assessment for T-courses

T101 Math for Elementary Teachers

This Skills Assessment Test is designed to assess basic arithmetic skills with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and order of operations. T101, T102, and T103 are designed not to teach basic elementary school mathematics, but rather take these skills and study them conceptually. The idea behind the Skills Assessment Test is to be sure the student has mastery of the prerequisite knowledge to be successful in these classes.

Preparing to Take the Skills Test

  • The Skills Assessment Test SHOULD NOT be taken without first working through some of the reviews below. Do these reviews BEFORE taking the skills test for the 1st and/or 2nd try:
    • Fraction Review (When ADDING and SUBTRACTING mixed numbers, do not change the mixed number to improper fractions. Work the problem using the mixed numbers.)
    • Integer Review
    • Order of Operations Review
    • As long as the student has an IUS username and passphrase, they can enlist the help of the tutors in the IUS Mathematics Resource Lab located in PS015.
  • It is not uncommon for students to fail the first time the test is taken. Therefore, students should review extensively before taking the test.
  • While taking the test students should also check their work and make sure fractions are reduced before moving to the next questions. The incorrect multiple choice answers were obtained from student work on previous versions of the test which were not in multiple choice format.
  • If a student fails the test twice, the Skills Assessment To Retest must be completed and turned in to qualify to take the test a third time.
    • Download the Skills Assessment To Retest
      • All work must be shown on a separate sheet of paper
      • When ADDING and SUBTRACTING mixed numbers, do not change the mixed number to improper fractions. Work the problem using the mixed numbers.
      • As long as the student has an IUS username and passphrase, they can enlist the help of the tutors in the IUS Mathematics Resource Lab located in PS015.
    • After completing the Skills Assessment To Retest, the student should make an appointment to turn in the assessment AND their work to Kimberly Bonacci (kbonacci@ius.edu). At this meeting, they will be given permission to sit for a 3rd and FINAL try at the T101 Skills Test.
  • If a student does not pass the test on the third attempt, the student cannot register for T101 for the upcoming semester. The student must then wait until the next registration period and only has 1 attempt for each future semester.
