The winner of the fourth annual IU Southeast Music History Research Award is Kailey Baird. Ms. Baird, a music business major, impressed the committee with her very informative paper, entitled “The Ospedale Della Pieta: A Beacon of Hope in the Baroque Period.” This paper investigates the role of an institution that served as part convent, part orphanage, and part music conservatory. In addition, the committee awarded Meg Gusler an honorable mention for her paper, “Relativity: Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s Treatment of a Man Into a Mythos.” Her work examines Glass’ and Wilson’s twentieth-century opera, Einstein on the Beach. The Music History Research Award honors excellence in research and writing in any of the four music literature/history classes.
