Coding Technology Certificate

Certificate Information

An 18 credit hour program that trains students to code information using ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS in the health care setting. Introduction to ICD-10-CM basic coding principles also covered as part of the program as well as billing and reimbursement concepts for commercial insurance carriers, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and Workers Compensation.Upon completion of the certificate, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Exam administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). With additional onsite hospital training, students can sit for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  Work experience is strongly recommended prior to taking either of these exams.

University Credit Hour & Residency Requirements

Students must complete 50% of the required credit hours for a certificate in residence at IU Southeast.

Allied Health Residency Requirement

In addition to the IU Southeast Certificate Residency Requirement (minimum of 50% of total credits), students completing the Certificate in Medical Coding are required to complete the following courses in residence at IU Southeast: AHLT-M390, AHLT-M391, & AHLT-M392.

General Education Core

The General Education Core does not apply to Certificate programs.

Specific Medical Coding Certificate Requirements

Students pursuing the Medical Coding Certificate must complete the following courses with a minimum grade of C:

  • AHLT-C 150 (Body Structure & Function) - 3 cr. OR ANAT-A215 (Basic Human Anatomy) - 5 cr.
  • AHLT-M 195 (Medical Terminology) - 3 cr.
  • AHLT-M 390 (Coding I) - 3 cr.
  • AHLT-R 200 (Pathology) - 3 cr.
  • AHLT-M 391 (Coding II) -  cr.
  • AHLT-M 392 (Introduction to HIM & Reimbursement) - 3 cr.
