Welcome new students! We are so excited that you have decided to join us for the upcoming semester at IU Southeast. Please see below for a step-by-step guide to enrolling for your first semester at IU Southeast.
Enrollment steps for new students
First-year freshmen
Timeline: ASAP
Your IT Account is what will get you access to IU Email as well as all information for IU New Student Orientation. You are not able to register for classes until you have set up your IT Account.
- To create your IT Account, you will need your student ID number. This number is listed on your admission letter. If you have misplaced your letter, you can look up your ID number.
- Create your computing account.
- You will then follow the prompts to create your account.
- If you have any trouble creating your IT Account, please contact the help desk at (812) 921-2447. If you have previously created an account for IU Dual Credit, this is your account. If you’ve forgotten your passphrase, you can recover the passphrase for your account.
Accessing a previous IU Computing Account
- If you already have an IT Account but cannot remember your passphrase, you can reset the passphrase by searching “passphrase reset” at one.iu.edu
- If you have any trouble accessing your account, please contact the help desk at 812/921-2447.
Timeline: 24 hrs. after you set up your IT account
Once you create your IT Account, please allow up to 24 hours for your account to fully activate, and then you will have an IU Gmail Account.
IU Email is an official form of communication for all offices at IU, so it is important that you check your IU Email at least a few times per week. This is where we will send all communications about New Student Orientation and registering for classes. If, after waiting 24 hours for your account to activate, you are still unable to access your IU Email Account, please contact the help desk at (812) 921-2447.
Timeline: Any time after you set up your IT account
When you meet with your advisor, you will be able to register for classes and ask any questions you may have that have not already been answered. All advising appointments are being handled via Zoom. You can schedule your Advising Appointment in the Student Appointment Scheduler. If you do not see an assigned advisor, click on Search Advisors and find your major.
Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email, in your IU Email, with the zoom link and login information. If you are unable to schedule online or would just prefer to speak with someone to schedule your appointment, please use the appropriate phone number below or email.

Timeline: Complete the first 4 modules prior to meeting with an advisor
Canvas is the learning management program that IU uses to facilitate online courses and trainings. This is where you will complete your orientation modules prior to meeting with your academic advisor. You can access the modules at any time by following the steps below.
- Go to Canvas.
- Click the “Log In” button. (You may need to enter your Username & Passphrase.)
- This should take you to your Dashboard, where the New Student Orientation course will be listed.
- Click on the New Student Orientation tile to enter the course. You can then use the Modules tab on the left-hand side to access all of the modules for Orientation.
- Once you have completed the Getting started at IU, Planning for Registration, and Learning to Register for Classes modules, you are ready to meet with your Academic Advisor.
*If you have any trouble accessing the Orientation Modules in Canvas, please email our New Student Programs & Leadership Coordinator, Cayla Maurer, at caymaure@iu.edu.
Timeline: Based on date you select
Prior to the start of each Fall & Spring semester, we host New Student Orientations Sessions. These sessions are currently being conducted online; however, we are hoping to return to in-person New Student Orientations in the near future. During orientation, you will have an opportunity to meet faculty and staff, as well as other students in your program. A few days prior to your scheduled New Student Orientation date, you will receive an email to your IU Email with instructions on how to access the online orientation. Please make sure you are checking your IU Email for this information. Register for an upcoming New Student Orientation.
*Note: Although highly recommended, the live New Student Orientation session is not a required step for enrollment at IU Southeast.
