Copyright Infringement and Illegal File Sharing

General Information

  • Why is digital downloading and file sharing activity illegal?
The website has information about the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, how to legally use digital music and movies, etc.

First Offense

  • What am I required to do?
The University Information Policy Office (UIPO) requires that you take the IU File Sharing Copyright Tutorial. That requirement is an effort to educate you about copyright infringement law and policy.
  • How can I take the IU File Sharing Copyright Tutorial and Pass the Quiz?
Visit the Copyright infringement incident resolution webpage on the website.
  • When do I need to complete the copyright tutorial?
You must complete the copyright tutorial immediately, to ensure that your IU network access is not disabled.
  • How do I avoid a repeat offense?
You are urged to uninstall the file sharing application (e.g. Limewire, BitTorrent, etc.) from your computer. Be sure to use the uninstall application that is provided with the program of which you want to remove. For example, if you uninstall Limewire use the Limewire uninstall application. If you use Windows Control Panel to uninstall the application, it is possible that the application will appear to have been removed from your computer, but still have elements on your computer, allowing others to file share---which could result in a repeat offense.

If you need assistance with uninstalling the file sharing program, visit the Help Desk in University Center South, Room 212 (top floor) and ask for Mr. Nick Ray.

Second Offense

  • What am I required to do?
You must complete the steps above before your IU network access will be restored.
